I have been teaching English in Asia for 10 months now. This has been the most incredible journey. I call it a journey because that is exactly what it is. A journey can be defined as (1) a period of travel (2) passage or progress from one stage to another: the journey to success.

After I finished University I was attracted to a job post in South Korea to teach English. I wanted to travel and experience new people and a new culture. I wanted to find a “new happiness” in life. I wanted to find myself. I wanted to work in a field I would never have considered for myself in South Africa. I wanted to do a job I was passionate about, which was working with kids. I wanted enough free time to explore…explore myself, South Korea, Asia, life. I also wanted to earn “enough” money and have decent benefits. This job had everything I was looking for.

I have had an “easy” life this year, yet I have struggled. I have been surrounded by great friends, yet felt lonely. I have tried to find myself, yet realized I am actually creating myself. I have been happy but suddenly unhappy at times.

I have always been a friendly outgoing person, yet appreciated alone time and quietness. I have never struggled to make friends or ceased to show others how much I care about them. I have always learnt something from every mistake I have made and I’ve tried not to make the same mistake again. I have always been level headed for the most part. I have never been a hugely ambitious person, yet I think it’s fair to say I am not a loafer either. I am a happy person but I find it slips away for no reason sometimes. All in all I could say I am pretty well balanced, but I have still felt somewhat unbalanced and incomplete in my life.

I have had a great job this year, yet my work from day to day hasn’t required much “intellect” as the world would see it, but I have made sure that every teaching everyday is done with passion. I believe one should do something with passion or not at all. Doing something with passion reaps many benefits and makes one feel happy.

I have learnt that you can find happiness with yourself anywhere in the world. It is merely a choice. I didn’t have to come all the way to South Korea to find happiness. I still haven’t found happiness, but rather I have created it. I have learnt that happiness is not a destination but a journey.

Everyday may not be good, but realize that there is something good in everyday. This is happiness.

Mistakes make us unhappy. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone can become unhappy. Mistakes are proof that you’re trying though. Your mistakes make you who you are. You learn and grow with each choice you make.

Everyday there is good and bad. Everyday there is happiness and unhappiness. Different things make different people happy. Happiness comes in many forms. Realise and think about these and write down what makes you happy. I like to call these “the happy”. Incorporate “the happy” into your life and do this daily. Happiness is a choice. Everyday you have to choose it. You are responsible for your own happiness.

Sometimes I feel like I have changed this year, but I believe that maybe I have finally just started to create myself and find “the happy”. I have realized the reason why I still felt unbalanced and incomplete is that I didn’t try to find “the happy” in everyday. I was looking in all the wrong places for “the happy”. I now know everyday what it is that makes me happy and I am constantly reminding myself of these and including “the happy” into everyday.

Happiness reaps success, love, new talents, honesty, belief, and value in your life. With these you will continue to grow into a wonderful, cherished, and complete woman. You have one life, it yours, it is happening now. Live it, understand it and endulge in it. Just by being you, people will see your zest for life, your passion and how you strive for happiness, and ultimately they will admire and learn from you. Be the best you can be and find “the happy” in everyday.

Remember, being happy doesn’t mean that everything is perfect, it means that you have decided to see beyond the imperfections.

Today, writing this, has made me happy 🙂

Write down what makes you happy right now. Keep adding to your list and incorporate “the happy” into your life everyday~!
